Diet, Cholesterol and Health

Especially in your younger years, cholesterol isn’t something we tend to think about. But what does your diet look like? Are you eating more fat then is recommended? We all can say we have become victim to that extra piece of bacon or sausage for breakfast, unless you are one of my vegetarian / vegan friends out there. Unfortunately, even if you don’t eat meat products you can still fall victim to high cholesterol. In fact, nearly 29 million American adults have high cholesterol. If left untreated, high cholesterol can raise the risk for heart disease (leading cause of death).

What is cholesterol?

You may be asking, what exactly is cholesterol? It is a waxy, fat-like substance made by your liver which is essential for good health. Your body needs it to perform important jobs, such as making hormones and digesting fatty foods. Cholesterol also comes from the foods we eat, and if we are healthy, our bodies maintain a careful supply of cholesterol and make more or less depending on how much we consume. Often dietary changes alone are not enough. On one hand you have what’s called HDL (“Good Cholesterol”) and on the other you have LDL (“Bad Cholesterol”). In ratio you want more HDL than LDL and over all to keep your total cholesterol under 200. If you are one of the 29 million that have high cholesterol you more than likely are taking or have been recommended a statin by your health care provider (one of the most widely prescribed drugs in the U.S. Statins are associated with a range of side effects, ranging from muscle soreness and achiness, to weight gain, to increased risk in type 2 diabetes: even possible cognitive risks).
