Leaves of Three, Let Them Be

Every year, I inevitably get poison ivy. I do know what it looks like and I avoid it, but still I get it every year. This year, it was a warm day in February and I needed to start playing in the dirt. There was English Ivy growing up the side of my shed, and unfortunately some hidden poison ivy growing along side it, with no leaves.

My favorite remedy for poison ivy relief is Jewelweed lotion; I wish this had been around when I was a kid. You can find it in the fridge at Rebecca’s and you should keep it in the fridge at your house. It’s in alcohol so I use it on a paper towel and then apply it to the affected area. You can also use it to remove the oils if you’ve just brushed against it. It’s made locally in Amherst, Virginia. An interesting fact about Jewelweed is that it tends to grow right next to poison ivy as if the creator gave us the solution along with the culprit.

My second favorite remedy is the “Rhus tox 4x” homeopathic pills by Washington Homeopathic. Working from the inside out, this is a minute dose of poison ivy. Traditionally, it is taken as a remedy for arthritis that gets better with movement.  I like to take it as soon as I notice I have come up with a case. And the best thing about it is that you can take it ahead of time, to prevent getting it later, if I could only remember. For prevention you take several doses, once a month according to the company’s old pamphlet.

These two remedies work so well for me, that I haven’t tried our other remedies. We have other things for poison ivy as well that other employees and customers have success with like the following: Be gone spray, formerly Rusto lotion w/grindelia, lotions with clay to dry the oils, and bars of soap specific to poison ivy treatment.

If you think you’ve been exposed to poison ivy, the bar soaps can be used as soon as you think about it . It can be washed with and then left on to dry, to help dry the rash, and calm itching.
