Heading Off Secondary Infections in the Winter

Normally, I am pretty healthy. Never get the flu, but do have allergies. Since moving to Virginia I have been sick each winter. The change in climate and vegetation have been hard on my body. The first winter I ended up with bronchitis. The second winter I ended up with laryngitis and a severe sinus infection. The third winter I again ended up with a severe sinus infection. In those first three winters I had to go get antibiotics four different times. This is my fourth winter here and the first winter I did not have to go to the doctor for antibiotics.  Now that I know the warning signs my body gives me early, I can successfully attack this naturally. This winter I have been using Counter Attack by Rainbow Light, Oil of Oregano by Nature’s Answer, Vitamin D3 2000IU by MegaFood, L-Lysine and Vitamin C for extra immune boost.

Counter Attack™ provides 3,899 mg of herbal strength for powerful immune system health. Designed to be taken at the first sign of seasonal discomfort, this herbal blend contains andrographis and berberine to mobilize the body’s acute response along with a fast-acting, stimulant-free Clear Relief Complex traditionally used to ease sinus and respiratory discomfort. Rainbow Light’s Herbal IQ™ Guarantee means its products have been thoroughly reviewed by qualified herbalists, backed by the latest science. Extracts are identity-verified and tested for purity, efficacy and safety. Formulated by Christopher Hobbs, PhD, and manufactured in the USA.

The health benefits of Oregano Oil can be attributed to its antimicrobial  properties like anti viral, anti bacterial, anti fungal, anti parasitic, anti oxidant, anti inflammatory, digestive, and anti allergenic.

This amazing oil may aid in the prevention of common bacterial infections, including urinary tract infections, skin infections and even food poisoning. A recent study on the antibacterial qualities of multiple essential oils found that both oregano and thyme oils showed the strongest levels of antibacterial activity. Oregano oil is known as a potent germ-killer, anti-inflammatory and pain reliever. In research done on the oil, it has been found that it could supersede many commonly-used pain killers. Oregano oil also has extremely high levels of free radical fighting antioxidants, agents that protect the body from the development of chronic conditions over time. It may also aid in the prevention and treatment of a variety of common infectious ailments including the common flu, psoriasis, eczema, athlete’s foot, yeast infections and bacterial infections. Oil of oregano has been found to be effective in killing Staphylococcus bacteria, as well as a multitude of other pathogenic germs. It is also equally as effective in its germ-killing abilities as common prescription antibiotics.

Oregano oil is also an excellent source of vitamins and minerals. It is high in the vitamins A, C, and E complex, as well as zinc, magnesium, iron, calcium, potassium, copper, manganese and niacin.

I like Megafood because it is 100% whole food and vegetarian.  Research over the last decade clearly documents that vitamin D is a premier modulator of immune function, helping to protect us from infection. Vitamin D health benefits seem to continuously be discovered, lending even more reason to attain the vitamin every day. Did you know this nutrient can actually “activate” the immune system, helping to fight off infection from both bacteria and viruses too? Some studies have shown a link between a lack of Vitamin D and the rates of influenza and respiratory infection. Vitamin D health benefits truly seem to cease to be discovered, with the primary benefit being an overall powerful positive effect on your immune system. Vitamin D could be called “nature’s antibiotic,” and with all of the side effects of prescription antibiotics, a natural source of immune protection should be welcomed with open arms.
